Germany 0-1 Spain | 2010-07-08 |

Carles Puyol was Spain's hero as his second-half header earned the European champions a 1-0 win over Germany in Durban to progress to their first-ever World Cup final.Spain dominated the match throughout without being clinical in front of goal until 17 minutes from time, Puyol rose to head in Xavi's corner and take Spain to a final showdown with Holland in Johannesburg on Sunday. In their wins over England and Argentina, Germany had began well but it was Spain who excelled from the start on Wednesday evening and they breached the Germany defence after just six minutes when Pedro played in David Villa, but Manuel Neuer came out well to block. Just before the quarter of an hour mark, Puyol wasted a glorious chance after Andres Iniesta's cross had found him free in the penalty area, but he headed over Neuer's crossbar. Germany were beginning to test Gerard Pique and Puyol in the centre of Spain's defence and after Alonso had shot wide for Spain, Germany's Piotr Trochowski forced Iker Casillas to palm wide his low 25-yard effort. Germany midfielder Mesut Ozil had reason to argue his case for a penalty just before half-time after being hauled down by Sergio Ramos but the referee waved play on, and Pedro went up the other end to drive straight at Neuer. Pedro - who replaced Fernando Torres in the starting line-up - was proving a constant threat for Spain and after a mazy run down the right just after the re-start, he set up Xabi Alonso who dragged his shot wide, and just a minute later he fired a fizzing left-foot shot wide of the opposite post. Spain were well on top and after Villa had curled inches wide, a stunning period of play saw Pedro denied by Neuer, Villa narrowly missed out on converting an Iniesta cutback and Pedro fired a second shot marginally wide. Germany had a golden chance to take the lead against the run of play midway through the second half when Lukas Podolski found Toni Kroos at the back post, but his volley was kept out by Casillas, and he was made to pay as 17 minutes later Spain took the lead. Xaxi sent in an inswinging corner from the left for Puyol to rise above Sami Khedira to powerfully head past Neuer. Spain wasted several opportunities to ensure the remaining few minutes of the semi-final were more comfortable but they kept possession sufficiently to play out the three minutes of injury-time and ensure that they made their first ever World Cup final.
