La Liga Top Spanish Professional Football Association

La Liga, also known as Liga BBVA (BBVA being the sponsor since 2008) was originally founded in 1929.

This top Spanish professional football association is contested by a total of 20 teams,  the last three being relegated to 2nd division (segunda division) replaced by the first three teams of that division.  The season lasts from September to June.

The two top teams qualify for the UEFA Champion League, directly entering the group stage and the fourth entering entering the 3rd qualifying round. The fifth and sixth placed teams qualify for the first round of the UEFA Europa League. A total of 59 teams have participated in La Liga. Nine have won the championship: Real Madrid (31 titles), current champions (20 titles), Atletico Madrid, Athletic Bilbao, Valencia, Real Sociedad, Deportivo, Sevilla and Real Betis.
